The 2020 Census is fast approaching, and every citizen – especially here in City of Lewes and across the First State – matters when it comes to determining a complete and accurate count.
Every 10 years, the federal government conducts a census, as required by the United States Constitution, to determine the nation’s population. But this decennial process is more than simply a headcount. It provides important information about our population and supplies critical data vital to determining everything from congressional and legislative districts to the amount of federal funding allocated to states, counties and municipalities. Some $675 billion in federal funding - $3 billion of that for dozens of programs here in Delaware - and how those funds will be divided among communities, is at stake as a result of the upcoming 2020 Census.
That’s why your information matters! An accurate count of the growing and diversifying population here in the City of Lewes will ensure Delaware wins the federal dollars our communities and citizens deserve, whether it’s for senior programs, land preservation, transportation improvements, and so much more.
So, how can you help? It’s easy! Beginning in March 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau will send an invitation to every American household to take part in the federal count. Then, on April 1, Census Day, do your civic duty and respond. Simply answer the census questionnaire in one of three convenient ways: online using a smartphone, tablet, or computer; dialing the designated toll-free number; or using the traditional paper form. The process will take less than 10 minutes, but your answers will have a lasting effect for years to come!
